Quick question... which way is correct to install the triangular washers - flat side towards head or outwards toward nut? Same thing for conical washer - cone towards head or outwards toward nut? See the attached pictures.

Which photos are correct? one, two, three, or four?

Thanks,

Thanks very much for the quick reply. We are trying to reinstall my son's manifold assembly after replacing the gaskets with a set of those from Australia that are so highly recommended. Couldn't get his car inspected with an exhaust leak, so we thought we'd go all out.

Once we came to the washers, I realized I couldn't remember exactly how they were oriented. I got out the ol' Haynes manual and this is what confused me. "Install the steel conical washers with the cup side facing the nut." First there is only one steel conical washer, not "washers". It is the top center one opposite the carburetor. "The cup side facing the nut" is what I would say is shown in photo three, but that didn't look right.

I know a lot of folks don't have much use for Haynes manuals, and this might be a good example of why, but it was all we had at the time we built this '74 Dart Sport about five years ago, and it got us through our first ever project. The manual... and lots of good information from folks like you here.

Thanks again,
Jerry

Never trust Haynes.

Chryslers original manual says:

"The six triangular washers should be positioned squarely on the machined surfaces of both the intake and exhaust manifold retaining pads. These washers must be installed with the conical side pointing away from the manifold...

Install the other concial washers with the cup side against the manifold"

And not to tight, 10 foot pounds only.
