im just about ready to install the oil pump. its a new melling pump. im reading in the service manual that i have to remove the face plate and outer rotor? im curious to why this needs to happen. also im curious on needing to prime this? if so, how do i go about doing it, manual says nothing about it. and lastly, ive read about some gears sucking, and shearing off. does this include melling? this motor is going to be a complete stocker, only power ups it has going for it, is a .060 over bore, and a surfaced head (just a clean up). it may or may not get a super six setup. i read somewhere in the oil pump article that stock engine, with normal oil, the gear will last for ever, and only will break under high pressure from thick oil and RPM. IS MY MELLING OKAY? |

I would not use the new pump (soft drive gear). If you had good oil pressure withe the old pump, that's the one I would use. Richard |

motor had terrible oil pressure before, it took a good 10 seconds to get the oil light to shut off. |

Look into swaping drive gear from old pump to new pump. Richard |

so pressing off the old gear on the stock pump, and guess what!?? gear broke, maybe some of these old gears arent so good anymore... the gear came pretty easy and smooth, it cracked a few teeth, one bad enough to finish by hand. im just going to run the new melling pump gear. im not racing the thing, completely stock, motor i doubt it will see 5k unless racing up the on ramp for a few seconds. and it will get thin oil. |

I would contact Doc for a hardened pump gear. It's much cheaper and easier to get this right the first time. |
