Now that my car is back on the road, I've noticed that my neutral safety switch isn't working properly because It will start in any gear. My shifter linkage is a bit sticky because (although it shifts fine from P to 1), I have to go past one gear (from 1 to P) and then back down (P to 1) to get to the gear I want on the way up. That is, if I'm in D and want to shift to N, I have to first shift to R and then to N. I've have this problem ever since my shifter cable temporarily touched the exhaust after a header installation. Previously, it shifted fine so I think the cable lube might be a bit gummy.

I called up a transmission shop about taking care of the shifter operation and safety switch repair. Since they haven't done very many of these transmissions lately, they couldn't remember the difference between the early and later A904s. I don't have my FSM with me (left it at the alignment shop last week) so I can't look up the difference right now.

Can a later 3-pin neutral safety switch be used in my transmission if the switch needs to be replaced?

It's worth your while to find and get the correct '65-'68 switch. See if Pat "Torqueflite Patty" Blais has one, or Old Car Parts Northwest.

At least I now know that the neutral safety switches aren't the same.

My expectation is that a worn switch won't start in any gear so I'm hoping that the switch issue is related to the shifter cable issue.

I climbed underneath my car last night and saw that the neutral safety switch has a single threaded connection. I was hoping that the switch was stuck in the closed position from sitting for so long and that I could get it freed up with some solvent. I tapped it with a hammer but it remained stuck.

I then tried to remove it but the nut is seized so the entire core of the switch was turning as I was trying to loosen the nut. I couldn't get a wrench on the switch because there wasn't enough clearance. Rather than opening up a can of worms, I decided to repair it later (nothing immediate) when I have the transmission out.
