Post subject:  stock cams
Looking for a list of stock cams and their specs. Doc showed me a link but it did not have lift figures. Wondering what's best for a stock driver and trying for great mpg. Sticking with a single barrel

i think the 70's model cams were the biggest of the stock cams... you might be better going with a comp cams RV style grind...

805moparkid, I'm curious: what are you basing your recommendation for a Comp Cams product on? Is it personal experience, or is it because you have heard the name "Comp Cams" and you are therefore repeating the name "Comp Cams", or is it something else?

The '71-'80 stock cam (same as '67+ export w/2bbl, same as marine) is the best stock cam. The '60-'64 and '65-'70 stock cams have less duration, less lift, and less overlap. Erson can grind you a cam such as Doug Dutra's RV10M-RDP that is not quite so stone-age as any of the stock cams. Comp Cams can sell you Chevy lobe profiles on a Mopar cam blank and then make excuses for your engine running poorly. Clifford can take your money and sell you misrepresented junk.

The 1972+ mopar cam grind was the better of the stock cams...

I would second the recommendation for either the Comp Cam 252 solid, or the Erson ground copy of the MP "243" cam (basically stock but with slightly more lift)...

Given that the last time I used a comp cam the gear on the cam was good and I never had a failure, but more people than naught, have had
failures due to the gear on the comp blanks (and some on the late mopar performance cams)... So I would stick with the Erson RV10 as the option.

i was just referring to the specs of the cam (i should have made that more clear)... personally im not really a fan of comp but since erson wont pick up there isn't alot of choice...

of course there is oregon regrind which is probably the best bet...

and dan i just dont repeat what i hear... and no im not doug, i havn't tried and tested everybody out there cuz im only 20...

I'd say the Comp or one of OCG's bump sticks would be a good bet. OCG is out of cores with good pump cams, so plan on sending one of your cores in.

The 252 does a good job. Experienced DI's car with that grind. Great mid-range, and nice manners. Fopar played with 268S grind for a bit. His stuff ran good, and delivered at the pump too.

I like the Erson RV15M RDP. Make sure to get Doc's grind and event timing. Might drop my old one in Linda's build. Nice manners, good economy, and stellar low and mid-range.

Dan, I have used Comp products in my motors before and never had any issues. My stuff ran pretty good too.

Have you ever used a Comp Cam or is this just more hear-say bashing?

In a stock motor with a 1 bbl stock cam choice is not going to be much of an issue anyway.

i will agree a custom cam will always be the better choice...

would i have better fuel economy with a super six setup? or is the 1 barrel. if the 2 barrel is better all around, id find a setup. the cam i have, is a total of 390 lift, which seems to be fairly small, and 162 degrees @.050.

so to answer my original question, you guys are saying my BEST choice for a good stock driver would be the "marine" cam?

None of the factory cams is optimum. The smaller Erson reverse dual pattern is probably your best bet, but for a bone stock 1bbl engine with a likely 8:1 compression ratio or less I think the Oregon Cam Grinding #125, see the list, would also work very well. OCG is local so that's a plus for me and being of a thrifty type I like the $70 price. If you get the compression ratio up you can use a little more cam duration and get a little more performance even with the 1bbl, but a 2bbl will help power and if the 2bbl is in better shape than the 1bbl it can also help economy.

Hay Dan, Ed (805MoparKid) is a good kid. He's very sharp. I promise he's a lot smarter than bein a parrot. I've talked with him at length and trust me bud, the knowledge is there. Maybe not a ton of experience, but he's gettin more everyday. He's one to keep an eye on, I guarantee you that.

do you have the number of that erson cam? im willing to take the $20 loss on this bullshit cam this shop sold me. should have known better.

all i want is a perfect running good mpg car, its a car i will share with my old lady.
