So my car right now has all amber "natural" lights in the dash, and I would like to know what the original color was. Also is it the same for the heater control light?

There were green cups over the dash illumination bulbs giving a green light.

Thank you, that works perfectly. I just got 5 autometer gauges that already have the green bulb cups on them so that makes it easy. Any idea if my local napa will have stuff like that?

The original blue (not green, but yellowish-white light from the bulbs + blue plastic = greenish light) plastic balloons were built onto the dashboard backplate. You can't buy them as separate items. I routinely remove them and let the light from the (uncoloured, plain clear glass) bulbs shine, for brighter dash lighting. If you've gotta have green, you can get little green "bulb condoms" not at an auto parts store but from various suppliers; I think my former employer Candlepower might still have them —— call 800-368-2700, say Dan Stern sent you and you're looking for green bulb condoms for a W5W bulb. Order a 10-pack of new brighter dash bulbs, too; part number 17177.

+1 on Dan's recommendation for brighter dash bulbs. I have put his recommended brighter dash bulbs in my 83 van, my brother's 83 van, and my 89 van and the difference is amazing. If you are going to replace the dash bulbs, you might as well upgrade since getting at the bulbs on an A-body is a PITA. Oh yeah, sorry about the incorrect comment that the bulb covers were green. Dan is right, they are blue.

Now, what would be cool is if there were a blacklight bulb that would work in the dash so you could paint the gauge faces and needles with paint that would glow under black light. Ooooooooo.........

I guess it could be possible to paint the needle with that glow in the dark paint, whatever its called, the stuff made from radium they use in watches.

Agreed! I would like to do something like this -- it's on my long, long list of cool projects I will never get around to or pay for. An incandescent bulb doesn't produce enough UV light to make fluoro paint "pop", and UV "LED bulbs" would almost certainly give poor results, but it probably would be possible to rig up enough UV LEDs behind the gauges to get enough UV light bouncing around to activate the fluoro paint. If I were to do this, I'd want to go all the way and have one of the gauge resto companies redo the gauge faces using high-grade fluoro glow paints such as these. I'd hope to replicate the effect of the early '60s Imperials and Chryslers with the electroluminescent dashboards.
