Post subject:  Trans cooler.
So this is a question that shows I'm still learning.

Benefits of running a trans cooler? I am assuming it's only useful if your engine is of a HP near the top end of what the transmission was designed for, or if the transmission is under constant load say from towing etc..

Has anyone ever used a cooler in a stock 904tf with benefit? or would it do more bad than good?

It's never bad to have good cooling, but if you do put a cooler in you should put a 4-way thermostat in there also so you get it up in temperature fast, running it cold is not good.

Thoroughly unneeded for a vehicle in any kind of ordinary driver-type service. If you do a lot of heavy hauling or other severe service, sure, install an auxiliary trans cooler. Or if for whatever reason you replace the radiator with one that does not have a trans fluid cooler (all stock radiators for auto-trans cars do) then yes, you'll need an external trans cooler.

There are better places to spend money and effort unless your driving conditions are severe enough to warrant a cooler.

And there's nothing such as "too cold" transmission fluid until we are talking about severely subzero temperatures.

Maybe not, but if you put in a big cooler for one or another reason without a thermostat it will take ages to get the tranny up in working temperature.

You can use the original cooler in the radiator to bring the oil back up to temperature....................

Hi Brussel, according to the Mopar manuals, the lines to an extra transmission oil cooler should be fitted after the original cooler in the bottom of the radiator, the original cooler should not be bypassed. I have never hard of anyone using a trans cooler having trouble with low temps, and we have them here!

If that may be a concern, use the latest synthetic transmission oils.

Thank-you for the information. I was considering putting one in after the transmission was rebuilt as it's not a high expense as I was told it would increase the life of the gearbox (I do plan to have the car for decades).

I won't worry about it. I considered a aluminium radiator once engine upgrades were complete (very far down the track) I am assuming this will have a better trans cooler. I will wait until then.
