I am in the process pulling the parts together to add AC to the 1983 D-150 I have a under dash unit with evaporator, dash controls dash vents, ,,,from a 86 D-150 that will fit nicely, got that stuff from turboram some time ago... I plan to purchase new: compressor, clutch, condenser, lines, dryers, expansion vales and ...other misc parts My question are: 1) since the 86 and 83 ac parts when new were designed as r12 units,, will I need to convert anything on the "new" components I purchase today if I plan to run r134a? Like o rings, orifice sizes,,, or are new parts made today, made for r134a? Since I am buying a new condenser,, I'll get a parallel flow unit. 2) The evaporator from the 86 unit did not have the lines plugged when it was removed,, ,, I can see lots of debris in the opening of the lines,, will a flush work on that? or is it best to just buy new? thanks DT |

No, the compressor and filter-dryer you buy now will be R134a-compatible. You should assemble the system using HNBR (green) or Neoprene (blue) O-rings, not the old black nitrile ones. thanks good info... I'll look for the blue / green o rings and PM Charlie about compressors,, the 83 D-150 had a factory air pump,, the air pump bracket doubles as the AC compressor bracket. for the lines,, I got the OE ones from turboram,, and they are good to have so I can see the OE line routings,, they are pretty beat up, so i'll go with new ones. I think I need to anyway as the parallel flow condensers I have seen on line have the inlet and out let connectors on opposite ends. |
