Post subject:  Piston Questions

Is there a list somewhere of the different pistons that were fitted to the /6? What I am most interested in learning is how deep in the hole did these slugs sit at the top of their travel. Probably more important for me to find out is if the pistons in the generic /6 overhaul kit the same, or are they different? Any specs on these things available? Thanks.

Nominally there were 2 (and only 2) kinds of pistons factory-installed in slant-6 engines: the regular type and the export low-compression type.

Replacement SL6 pistons usually sit at .160 below the block deck.
standard pistons are flat top, the low compression pistons have a large dish in them.
Block deck height and cylinder head chamber sizes are "all over the map" with the SL6 so those numbers need to be checked prior to doing any meaningful compression and DCR calculations.

From my experience, I feel that the best way to get better compression and performance with a 225 SL6 these days is to build a long connecting rod engine.

"all over the map" indeed! I had one engine with pistons .165" down & a second at about .175" - Static comp ratios of 7.8-7.9:1 were the norm.

Thanks, guys. Just the info I was looking for.

I had been looking at the long rod 225, this tilts the decision in its favor.
