hi  ive got a strange question for you lot! now, I know that the correct torque for the main bearing cap / crankshaft bearing cap bolts is 85ftlb (?) but any idea what the minimum and maximum torques would be? like if for any random reason I couldnt reach 85 or could turn it even tighter. please, just fulfill my curiosity

+/- 5% is is typical manufacturing torque tolerance applied to critical fasteners. Other fasteners are typically +/- 10% the precision and accuracy of the torque wrench is of some importance with the criticals,,, the criticals are:main-rod-head-flywheel bolts |

Bolt torque is also determined by grade of material, length and thread size. |

yeah uh I probably should find out what those are i am such a darn retard... the bolt is grade 8 though. and why am I asking, really? I had a bit of an accident with them bearing caps, or rather one of the saddles. http://www.stupidfusion.com/kuvia/?dir=sl6 heres the photos of what was done to the block to get around the problem... it actually doesnt look quite as bad as the pictures would make it appear, im somewhat carefully optimistic of this fix working. the guy who did the job says that i should be able to tighten the new bolt down to 90 ftlb (120nm) but no more than that. nevertheless im somewhat doubtful as the new hole is only as half as deep as the original... |

have you consider a stud and nut on that cap? |
