Post subject:  swapping the slant 6 for a 340

hi so i am currently running a slant 6 in my 66 barracuda but found a 340 and am looking to do a swap out how difficult is it going to be and do i need anything that is not on the car already

You need radiator, transmission, exhaust system for 340. You need a V-8 front K-frame or "transplant" eng mounts from Schumacher. Assuming your fish had a slant 6 from the factory, then the rear axle, front & rear suspension, & brakes should all be upgraded to handle the additional power & weight. If you change the rear axle then you need a shorter driveshaft. etc, etc, etc.

While possible, you'd be happier starting out with a V-8 car.

Actually, for an early A-body you don't need to swap the K-member. Other than that Wagons is correct. The only exhaust manifolds which fit are the '64-'66 273 manifolds which are not very good. TTi makes headers though. If you have a rod actuated throttle instead of a throttle cable you'll need the throttle pedal assembly and cable. There are wires to shorten and lengthen.

What are your goals with the car? Do you already own the 340?
If you want something lots of people have done and will get little attention at car shows, then do the 340. If you want something more interesting build the slant.
If you want to go pretty darn quickly and get good fuel economy a mild EFI turbo SL6 build will do quite well, but can get expensive.
What's your budget and how fast do you want to go?

i dpnt hve the motor yet but i do want to be unique i think im just going to build the slant for now i want to get it over 200 hp for sure

With cylinder head, induction and exhaust work I took my 19 second '67 Valiant to 17 flat. That was with the stock '67 camshaft and column shift 3-speed. I used a 390 Holley 4bbl on an Offy intake with a stock exhaust manifold and full 2 1/4" exhaust. A good 2bbl would do fine at that performance level, but the Offy and carb were bought used at a good price. The car was a lot more enjoyable to drive with the added power. With more compression, a street performance cam and headers or Dutra Duals I feel I could have run mid to high 15s pretty easy. Trying to run too much quicker and you start giving up good street manners and end up needing other supporting equipment such as a gear change, better clutch or torque converter, etc.

Not so, with some judicious grinding on the flange, the driver side 340 exhaust manifold will work just fine, if you have manual steering. The passenger side fits with out a problem with the 90* oil filter adapter. The problem is that OE 340 exhaust manifolds are worth there weight in gold. And to think, we used to dump them into the trash can...

The standard V8 mounts for a '65 or '66 will work fine as long as you modify the driver side mount as outlined in the old DC racing manuals.
