hi. im going to be puting my 225 slant back together later. i need to know what to torque the head bolts and intake/exhaust manifold???? how many pounds? thanks jimbo |

For torquing it's best to rely on the honest-to-god manual in front of you, rather than what folks recollect. For example, I just did them on mine, but I can't recall if it's 65 or 85 on the head bolts. But I had the factory manual open at the time. Sadly, it's at home. Andrew |

Valve cover = snug, Intake/Exhaust to head = 10 ft.lbs MAX for a stock setup. Manifold to manifold should also be 10 ft. Lbs Max. ~RDE~ |

FSM lists 40 inch lbs for valve cover bolts. That would be 1.8 foot lbs--- which is not very much. And, doesn’t state what gasket material is used. Before installing valve cover, check its gasket flange to make sure it is true, or rather flat, without any deformation around bolt holes. If not nice and flat, gently work deformed areas with hammer & dolly until corrected. Glue gasket to valve cover and let it dry before installing cover on head. Use a washer under valve cover bolts to enlarge bolt’s contact area. Also, be sure to clean lip the valve cover seals onto atop head. This will make for a good oil tight seal, and easy removability at the next lash adjustment. I use a reusable "rubber like" valve cover gasket, and tighten its bolts with a nut driver until snug in several steps. That is; fasten down cover gently & equally all bolts, make two more rounds of tightening. You won’t need to crank hard, and may think bolts aren’t tight enough which is where you stop. Check for leaks and snug a bit more where needed by hand until just tight enough to stop leak. Following this method will give you a nice, clean, oil free engine for many valve lash adjustments. |
