hey boys,

I am still jumping back an forth between using my stock 904 and performancing it or starting to collect parts for a four speed OD conversion. I know i'll require everthing from bellhousing, trans hump, gear box, pedals etc etc. My question is what kinds of vehicles can I start hunting for for usable parts? I have a feeling that a truck might be my easiest find, but will it work for me? I realize that gearing in an truck transmission would be lower than I want for the car. Can a guys change out gearing? Probably not worth it.....be cheaper to find proper trans I think. Just tossing ideas around.

what reasons do you suggest the 904 over a manual?

Not sure about Doc,but the old 4 speeds(from any brand) just kinda suck IMHO,and I am a manual transmission advocate! While the 904/727 were the best automatics made back in the day, strong, efficient, and smooth shifting. Being a manual transmission guy I have owned both the 833 and 833 o.d and am just not a big fan of them. Clunky shift with long throws and vuage engagement. Like I said this is all just my opinion, but if I were to go through the trouble of converting a auto car to manual I would go with something like a T5,or the toyota surpa 5 speed.

The 904 is a good transmission. For performance use I would keep the 904 rather than use the A833OD. The gear spacing on the OD makes for big nasty RPM drops when shifting at higher RPM, but they work pretty good in a stock application. I liked the OD in my '76 Aspen, but not in my warmed up Dart. I was amazed at the performance difference when I took out an 833OD and put a standard 833 in the Dart.

True, the 833od feels like you skipped second and went to fourth hahahaha It is not too bad if you are running 3.91+ gears. I had 4.11's in my Dart light, and while still a noticeable drop,no where near as bad as the 3.55 I had in there.

I know Tom (shaker223) is using a reworked 904 with manual turbo action valvebody, Blocked accumulator, A999 front drum with 5 clutches and 4 in the rear. Low gearset (2.74 1st) from 80s trans, Stiffend strut rod for the front band.

Is there any site dedicated to the 904? I bought a torqueflite book for performancing the 727 some time back. The 904 being the little brother to the 727 lets me apply the mods for the 727 to the 904.

What converters would a guy suggest? For that matter what is the stock converter?

Ryan
