Post subject:  My 67 Valiant project
I have been visiting this site for awhile now and have been picking up some good advice and tips, thank you all. I have a 1967 Valiant and have started accumulating parts for a Super Six swap. I bought the car four years ago with the aluminum block SL6, 1 bbl, 904, 8 3/4 (323). It's a blast to drive and even though kids my age think it's a big jalopy, I get lot's of thumbs up from adults. It seems that EVERYONE of them has owned at least one in their lifetime. I am a student and have very little money but would love to fix my car up enough to impress some of those fart-can driving punks and maybe a girl or two :lol: starting with the drive train and then tackling the body work (might have to farm that part out). After reading some posts on here about the aluminum blocks and their issues I'm a bit nervous about things such as head gaskets etc. One of your members, Aggressive Ted, lives near me and has offered to give me a tip or two, (thanks Ted!) and I could use all of the tips I can get. I'm new but eager.

That is a sweet ride! One of my favorite mopars. IF you really want to beat on ricers,I would consider finding an Iron Slant to play with. The aluminum block is very cool,but not the best for high performance apps. Plus if its a good runner,you could sell it for enough $$$ to buy an iron block,and add some go fast goodies to it. If you dont want to go too crazy with it,add the super six and 2 1/4 exhaust,electronic ignition and a good tune up,and enjoy. Who cares what the ricer boys think,and chicks dig the classics! Welcome :D

Also,listen to Ted, he knows his stuff!

Cool car. I agree it might be easier to build up an iron engine, if you are daily driving the car. Do some searching/reading on the site and start asking questions. Develop a budget and goals for the car so folks can answer you with some perspective.

Congrats on the car. Don't worry about what the kids think. I just graduated highschool and everyone respects/loves my car, not because it's super fast. Because I did the work and put the time in to make it nice. I brought my car home between my sophomore and junior year for 900, and it was a pile, the bumpers were falling off, the fenders and quarters were smashed in, it was abused. All my friends laughed at me. But I did the body work and paint work and messed with the motor and exhaust and now my friends love it and people stop what they are doing just to see me rumble by. If you want to make it nice do some motor work, get it quick, do the body work (might take a while) pick out a good color for it, the ladies love sublime/limelight green by the way :wink:

There is a lot of stuff you can do on a budget to increase the ponies in your slant. Upping the compression is a big thing, also while the head is off for a compression bump, oversized valves and a clean up of the ports is good. I did my 2.25" exhaust for 70 bucks, and it helped a lot.

There are a lot of slant guys in the northwest and they are very friendly.

Thank you guys for the kind words and encouragement! I do you think you're on to something when you say to think of getting an iron engine and applying my effort to it, I'm going to start snooping around and see if there's anything out there within my budget. I'm still going ahead with the super six and 2 bbl swap to this engine though, I bought the parts already and it will be a good learning experience if nothing else.
I'll think about the Sublime green if it might get me a little somethin somethin :twisted:

I posted this in the 'Social' forum under the "What did you do to your slant today" thread but thought it should be added to my previous topic as an update.
I started my very first super six swap on this beautiful sunny afternoon. With encouraging advice from local members such as Aggressive Ted and Reed I jumped in with both feet. I read Reeds 'swap' article and learned a lot, I hope I make him proud. Anyway, I shot penetrating oil on everything two days ago, then again last night and carefully started removing parts today. Everything came off slick as snot, not a broken bolt, lost nut, or even a banged knuckle in the entire task. I've already had my 2bbl intake cleaned and it's sitting on the shelf waiting for me to hurry up. Since I'm reusing my exhaust I'm sending it out to be cleaned also.
Please look at my pictures and let me know if you see anything I'm doing wrong. What is the best way to clean the carbon crud off of the mating head surface before installing gasket and manifolds? Do you know if I can get a new one of these choke coil things? The one I have has seen better days!
