Post subject: | Plugs, drool tubes, seals and leads |
Hi all, After finally getting my EI installed (although not working properly yet, gimme a few days . . .) I would like to add my new spark plugs - NGK ZFR5Ns. When I try the current HT lead in them, it doesn't fit properly, it's loose (around the ceramic and at the top contact) and doesn't seem long enough (the plug is too far down the drool tube fore the leads to reach - the dust covers prevent them). Can anybody recommend me a good set of leads for my '60 head slant for use with these plugs? Magnecors look very expensive and I'd quite like the dust covers. Also, the drool tubes appear to be damaged, a bit torn and mishapen around the plug hole. Is there a source for these? I've had a search on the board and haven't found a supplier. Last of all, can I get the gaskets to match these? Where from? I've put all of these in one post since I'd like all the parts to fit together. I thought all sparkplug contacts were the same size but that doesn't seem to match with my lead/plug fit issues. Any help or suppliers anybody can recommend would be greatly appreciated. All the best, 60 Ply |

Check out this thread for seals. New tubes?? no, as far as I know, you will need to source them secondhand. CLICK HERE regards,Rod |

I think the Magnecor leads are the top pick. I worked with the guy at Magnecor to optimise the boot choice and lead lengths on my last order. New original-type plug boots were sourced from Lectric Limited, if I'm not mistaken. If you mention "Slant-6" and "Daniel Stern" in corresponding with both parties, you'll likely wind up with a good set of HT leads you needn't think about again for many years. |

Hi guys, Thanks for the info guys. I'll have to do a bit of searching for the parts I need, looks like a trip to the wanted section is in order! Dan - sounds like you got the leads sorted for us slantsixers, do Magnecor build the whole lead up or do I have to order the boots seperately from Lectric? If I go the magnecor route I'll have to stick with the old leads and plugs for now, the Magnecors may be damn good value but that doesn't make them affordable right now. Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it All the best, 60 Ply |

I got the magnecors a couple years back. They are pricey, especially after shipping and customs/duty fees to Vancouver, BC. So far so good, but haven't put more than 5 thousand miles on the car in that time. Hmm.. I wonder how the Dart would be as a daily driver? |

Dan: Quote: though I'm curious what the compression reading was on the first, second, and third compression
I didn’t read gage at each compression stroke. Perhaps I should get a remote starter button so I can read gage as engine roll over. Remember the cam is far from stock with a ton of overlap.Quote: the engine was warmed up and the choke and throttle were fully open and all six plugs were removed during the compression test
Yup This morning it suddenly occurred to my atrophied brain housed safely within its thick scull to use the compression tester’s threaded hose to connect compressor to combustion chamber, and listen for air escaping once both valves have closed. I’ll try filling combustion chamber with air later today once back home. Quote: Also sounds like your plug wires are long past due
Agreed.Quote: Could be an arc path, visible or invisible, internal or external.
I looked for tracks, saw none, but last winter while distributor was removed from car during engine compartment beautification project, I cleaned cap & wires to look like new.The present cap has aluminum contacts, which I had removed the usual deposit build-up, and the little screw off cap on top. I have no idea how long wires and cap have been in service. That said, along each wire there is printed; 7mm, high temperature, 96. Perhaps these are historical parts from the last century… Engine is equipped with peanut head. Dose Magnecor make up the full set with boots, or is it up to me to source boots from Lectric Limited, and assemble wires & boots? Any particular person I should talk to at Magnecor, or just the service desk folks? |
