Hi All,

If it's not one thing it's another, and I think I've got top post in damn near all the forums on this site with all the issues I've had over the last 36 hours!

Just got ignition sorted and took the car out for a short drive. Car was dead hot from all the idling/tweaking etc though.

As I pulled in to park, I slowed down and took my foot off the throttle. As the car slowed, I got a "CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK" coming from under it. It seems too slow for wheel noise, I thought it might be at prop shaft type frequency. I could feel a judder matching it through the seat.

The noise is like a dull thudding combined with a gong-like chime, all at around propshaft speed.

A few weeks ago I replaced the hand brake shoes (internal drum on the back of the trans) and I'm wondering if it was somthing to do with that. When I did the handbrake, I resorted to all kinds of methods to getting the tailshaft nut off; heat, two foot pry bar and eventually got it off with an impact wrench - I'm worried I may have damaged somthing in the transmission.

The noise is quite disconcerting, but only seems to happen when 'coasting' in drive at low speed (5mph?). Turning the car one way or another can somtimes enourage it to happen. Also, sounds like it is coming from under the car, not really towards the rear axle.

Any ideas?

My 2¢:
1) Check that you have enough space around the different parts of your exhaust system, the engine moves a little when letting up on the throttle, and something may clank into an exhaust pipe.

2) Double check your clutch/converter fasteners!

Looking at your actual symptoms (and not substituting other random ones that might lead to a diagnosis of exhaust-, clutch-, or converter-related issues) I share your suspicion that something's awry with the handbrake. I'm afraid you're probably looking at taking it apart again.

I'm inclined to agree - it coincides too much with me working on the handbrake for it to be anything as far upstream of the trans as the torque converter, and I've never had a problem with the exhaust.

Driving to work tonight (it's only one mile but that's a long bloody way to walk with two cameras, two laptops and a dozen boat hulls!) I was coasting into a parking space when I put the trans into neutral - this made the noise much more pronounced.

I suspect that the problem may well be to do with one of the shoes (leading/trailing -which one's which??) binding when the drum is being 'driven' from the propshaft side.

Ahh well, I'll have to pull it apart and sort it. It'll be a few days but I'll let the group know what the problem is, for future reference.
