Post subject:  Carburetor Squealie
I replaced my old decrepid Holley 1920 with a shiny new one rebuilt by Holley. Everything runs beautifully, but there is a loud squeal coming from the carb. The pitch of the noise lowers as throttle is increased and dissappears when the vaccuum hose to the choke pull-off is removed. Anyone have any ideas. Should I return the carb to Holley for another?

B.T.W. I just registered, but I've been visiting for months. I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone who has posted a reply to even the stupidest question. Your knowledge has taken a hunk of crap that would barely idle to a reliable machine that can cruise at 70 all day. :D

If it's a whistle we're talking about, it sounds like a vacuum leak. If you have a Mity-Vac tool you could test the choke pull-off. If you have a nice stethoscope you might be able to narrow it down.

I had the EXACT SAME problem and could not figure out what it was.

I drove around for about a year with it doing that.

The quality of the Holley rebuild is not the best. I had to replace mine twice. I was told that you had to expect that with 40 year old parts and to just keep exchanging it until yo get a good one. Of course I exchanged mine while I was doing the rebuild and let the warrantee expire. If it is still under warrantee, I would return it.

I ended up pulling the hose off of the choke pull-off (couldn't take the squeal any longer). I drove around for about a week. When I put the hose back on, the noise was gone.

I also started to use premium gas. That is probably unrelated.

I have the same problem with my rebuilt carter, the old junk carb I had on it didnt do it, it only happened when i got a rebuild. I'll be looking into it very soon because the noise is bad.

Well, Im glad Im not the only one. Thanks for the input, maybe I'll just trash the whole thing and go with a 4bbl. I cant take that noise much longer!

With your engine running, try tightening screws on the carb. My 1920 had the same problem, and it was a loose screw that needed a lot of force to get it tight enough to stop the whistle.

I also had the EXACT same problem. The sqeal was coming from the fact that the the three screws holding the "economizer" down were not tight, they have to really seal. Try tightening them hard and I bet your problem will be solved.
