Post subject: | Timing Help |
Here's a little background info stock 83 truck engine ran when I pulled it from the truck. While I had it out and was cleaning it up and painting it before putting it in my dart I discovered that the old distributor that was on the engine (points style) had a bad vacuum pod so I switched it with the good points distributor that was in my 1964 engine. Now I am having a hard time getting it back in time. I have set the engine at TDC and pointed the rotor at #1 but seem to run out of adjustment before I can get it dialed in. I guess my main question is whats the easiest/best way to get to the hold down adjustment on the bottom of the distributor if I could get to that I could get it timed and back on the road. Thanks guys, 64drtgt |

If that engine was an 83 it should have had a lean burn distributor in it with the later style hold down. But anyway, to get to the adjustment on the bottom I took a 3/8 or 7/16 wrench (can't remember which one) and bent it at a 90* bend about 1 inch from the head. Also, that adjustment really isn't needed if you get the distributor back in the right way. Take out the plugs, turn it over until #1 is at TDC, then put the distributor in so that the rotor points toward the #1 tower on the cap. The rotor is going to turn when you put the dist back in due to the angle of the gears, so turn it a little bit so it will fall right into the #1 spot. |

Well all it took was me taking a break from it and then going back out and it pretty much fell right back in time. Got it running and am finishing other little odds n ends up. |
