| Post subject: | Placement of IAT sensor |
I have been in an ongoing discussion with Peter about what to bring down, and what changes I should make before I arrive there, and here is what he said about the IAT sensor location. This is a compilation of quotes lifted from a string of about 5 e-mails that took place over the last 3 or 4 days. I thought this was worth sharing. "I suspect you are getting some extreme heat-soak where the IAT sensor is not reading the air temp, but the temp of the intake tubing. I've seen this a lot and it drives MS's Ideal Gas Law fueling absolutely crazy. Possibly the sensor should be relocated closer to outlet of intercooler. Back to your project, at this point, I think getting the IAT sensor located to a more accurate location is the only thing I can think of The goal should be that anyone can jump in your car, start it and drive off. Once I understood this heatsoak issue and addressed it, my idle and startup AFR's have been much better on all the cars I've worked on since. Having said that, if your goal is mainly to get the ignition going, you can work on the IAT sensor later. But it should make an immediate improvement" I have gone ahead and removed the tubing under the fender, outside the engine bay, right after the intercooler, and am having my welder place a bung in it, and will rewire it in the next 2 or 3 days. I will let you know how big a difference it makes. Sam |

Good info, Sam. I have my IAT on the turbo Dart out on the fender for now, and it made big a difference to move it from near the MC (initially forgotten about and hanging from wires - haha), to in front of the radiator support. I may even move it further away from heat... Lou |

Not sure if this was mentioned before but may be worthy of repeating - Get the IAT's with plastic bodies. If not plastic bodies at least the ones with metal bodies but the actual sensor isolated from the body with plastic. This may help the heat collected from the body of the sensor from migrating to the sensor itself. |

I'm putting the IAT sensor right in the intercooler end tank on my Dart. Also putting a second one in the opposite side so I can see how well my intercooler is working. |

Yep, once I get an intercooler on there, that's where mine'll go (end tank, cold end). Lou |

Pardon me for being out of it;What is the MC? I'm sure I will say "DUH!", when you tell me. I have my IAT on the turbo Dart out on the fender for now, and it made big a difference to move it from near the MC (initially forgotten about and hanging from wires - haha), to in front of the radiator support. I may even move it further away from heat... Lou Sam |
