Post subject:  holley 1945 slouch off idle

Okay so swapped out my bbs that I couldn't lean out enough for my 1945 after installing a new brass float from walker products and a #63 jet (had a #621) only problem I'm seeing now is its a little slow off idle (but better than the bbs). It really comes alive at 30 mph. Just wondering if thats about normal or is there something to adjust or look into or am I just over analysing again. My setup is 68 225 HEI with ngk zfr5n plugs gapped to .045 rockers adjusted right. 78 amp dual field alt.

Is your accelerator pump working and is the vacuum can on your distributor able to hold a vacuum and advance the timing? Also, where do you have your vacuum advance line hooked? Is it hooked to the intake manifold or to the ported vacuum port on the carb?

Its hooked to correct port on the carb, dissy is new and i tested the vac can before install, acc pump is working now that the new pistion cup is installed (same time as the brass float). I pulled one of the plugs, Its a little better (VERY light brown mostly white). Should I step up to a #65 jet or is that way to big? Im not sure what my total timing is but the base timing is at 5 deg.

I'm wondering about ignition timing. If you have a distributor for an earlier electronic ignition car they have a very slow advance curve and can give the symptoms you describe.

So where should my total timing be for best performance for daily driver.

Post subject:  Recurve

I am running about 52 degrees total. Take look at Engine FAQ, Recurve info and Ted's curve. It is all in very quickly so at a 2000 rpm cruise it is well advanced and snappy feeling.

With a 1920 Holley Economaster, I really like a #57 jet with a quick mechanical advance and a lot of vacuum advance I can control with my foot. My current setup is a stock 79 SL6 with over a 100,000 on it and it is very punchy.

I would recommend a recurve with a lighter spring. But first use Joe's chart and map out what you have first, then share with us and make changes later.

Sounds like your plenty rich, just not much mechanical advance. What is your initial advance set at? Maybe you can compensate there with out getting into the distributor.

What vacuum advance are you running? I use a VC-208 which is stamped 11R for 22 degrees of vacuum advance. However, I have extended the slot so I am getting 26 degrees from it.

So after double checking the base timing I was a little off. It was at 3 deg btdc. so I pulled the dissy out to try adjusting the bottom bolt to give me more room for adjustment and I was looking the vac can over and there are no markings on it and the springs are natual color. my parts dissy shows 8.5R and green springs. going to dry giving it a little more adv and see how it runs.

okay so I set the base timing to 8 deg btdc. mech timing looking like it was around 18 deg and vac timing was around 25. took it for a drive to get some fresh gas and it seems better. Starts up better too.
