Guys

Going back to buy another SL6 from a guy I bought from about a month ago. I'm buying what I saw was a complete red longblock with a glass sediment bowl style fuel pump.I know my slant sixes from the late 70's up & so I need a few bits of info. Like is it a 225, 190, or 178???

Serial numbers? Special markings on the casting?

Any input is appreciated!

Early would be a 225 or 170. The 198 wasn't built until the 70's and would most likely be blue unless somebody squirted it. How many freeze plugs? If it's got three, it's not a 198.
Look at the ID pad on the deck. The size will be stamped there.
Once you've seen a 170, you won't have any problem identifying one. The deck is considerably higher for the 225/198 RG engine than the 170" LG.

170 deck is very close to (or at) 1.5" shorter than a 225. Crossover hose from water pump to head is a good way to gauge it. The 170 has a really short hose - about 2".

Hi Aluminum Six.
You may have use for the Slant Six Engine Parts Reference Matrix in this link to the article section. Print it out, and keep a copy in the car.

Another article worth browsing through before searching for an engine, is Doc's article Playing With Blocks.

Happy hunting!

Olaf.
