wanting to get the alternator housing from a 83 D-150 separated from the internals to blast and re paint it,,, it looks like if I remove the hub pulley and then unthread a couple of long through bolts the exterior housing for the alternator will split in two halves,, or it there more to it than that,, |

Removing the pulley requires a special tool, and the housing was not originally painted (nor was it originally blasted). |

this is not the OE alternator,, that one died back in about 05, out in the the wilds of Illinois,, the alternator that is on there now is an after market NAPA unit,,looks like the exterior was painted heavily during the re man process,,, and Lou,, yes,, not having the alternator done is the reason  ,, that was my last hope, I was going to load up the bed with batteries and run an electric truck,, as the machine shop has had the crank case for two months now. Actually I have a great start on 2012!

Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive kit for removing the pulley that worked fine for me. Don't forget to remove the brushes before you seperate the case, and don't put antisieze those long bolts when you put them back. I did that once, and it was a mistake. |

took the alternator apart last night,, borrowed a pulley puller from AZ,, between the info I saw here and the FSM,, the process was fairly easy. took the AZ puller back this AM, and since I had the alternator apart I asked if they had a "rebuild kit" . The store guy said he did not know, as he never sold one but would check,, he came back with one,, package looks like it has sat on the shelf for a long-long time,, but it has the brushes,diodes set, insulating washers... any ideas on where I can find the bearings? |

I used to buy my alternator bearings from JCWhitney and keep some in stock at home, but JCW doesn't seem to carry them anymore. The bearings are the same for most older Ford, Mopar, and GM alternators and even many idler pulleys, so I'd imagine any good old fashioned parts place would have them in stock. |

thanks, I called a local auto shop,, Stan's Auto Electric,, has them in stock, rear needle is 3.62 the front sealed ball is 4.29 |
