Post subject:  Air Intake Sensor Trouble

Sorry to renew an old discussion. But I am having a heck of a time trying to get the air intake temperature sensor to work properly. I am pretty sure its fried, as the sensor nipple in the air filter housing has a sizable vacuum leak when hooked up properly to a carb vacuum source. When the nipple is plugged, the door rises as expected, and releases easily when vacuum fades.

Winter's right around the corner here in SW Michigan, and I would love to get benefit from the exhaust heat riser for faster startups in extreme cold.

Any thoughts if mine can be fixed, or where I can get a replacement?

Yours is toast. They generally can't be repaired, though you might try spraying some carb cleaner into the "inside" nipple while it's under vacuum. Replaced, yes. I have some new ones on the shelf if you need one; send me a PM.

RockAuto still has some, but you have to look through different years to see if it is listed, I got some for my supersix '77 Aspen, listed under 'Emission'. They call it 'Air Temperature Sensor'.

As a temporary fix, I punched a small hole in a vinyl vacuum cap and put a bit of foam in there, then pushed it onto the vent nipple of the sensor - it throttled the leak way down so everything worked OK.
