Spent some time perusing hits on muffler/exhaust set ups.

Here's what I got:

Stock 170
Dutra D's
2 barrel

I'm not looking for loud though a little hum I can tolerate. I'm looking for performance.

This is where I've landed:

Taking DD's suggestion of using the FM Y pipe 2" in and 2.5"out (with his slip/clamp feature) I should then run in to a Flowmaster 50 series with 2.25" in/out. Open up the inlet side to accomodate the 2.5" and then exit out with a 2.25 tailpipe.

Am I on the right track with this?

Should I ream the modified stock manifold out a bit?

Any suggestions/input appreciated.

Thanks...Ken

If you want to make noise, including a very likely drone at highway cruising speed, get the Flowmaster. Me, I find it fun to make noise for a couple days, then the novelty wears off and it gets real old, real fast. My neighbors probably find the novelty even less durable than I do. I like my cars quiet, so I get my exhaust unrestriction by using a larger-than-stock, stock-type muffler. The stock unit was really tiny, with 1¾" inlet and 1½" outlet, in a 3" × 7" body. Tiny! You can go to a much larger '95 Chev Caprice item with 2¼" inlet and outlet in a 4" × 9" body. MUCH better flow and it'll have a nice note to it, but it'll still be quiet and drone-free.

Thanks Dan

No..not into noise. I got my AARP card some years ago. :)

Did some search for that Caprice muffler. I'm seeing 18" and longer.

Guess it's time to crawl under there and see what I can fit.

Any benefit to reaming out that modified rear manifold?

Thanks again

I guess I'm the only one who likes the Flowmasters. I have a super six and about 25k on my motor. I had a 2 1/4" exhaust w/Flowmaster put on a couple years ago. I was skeptical after reading posts on here but I just figured what the hell....couldn't be worse than the crappy sounding cherry bomb I had on it.

I was surprised when I got the car back from the exhaust shop. It sounded perfect to me. It's the best sounding stock slant I've ever heard. It's not loud nor quiet. There is no drone at all up to 80mph (haven't really done more than that) and it sounds nice and deep. Not farty like glass packs do. So far I'm one of the few who likes the Flowmaster....and trust me I'm not tolerant of loud/abnoxious exhausts either.

Flowmaster 50 series don't really drone. A 40, or super 44 will drone like a scene out of star wars. I think if you went with a 50 you would be satisfied, I've run 3 and they were very nice.

I just added a single 2-1/4 pipe from the stock manifold to a Magnaflow single in/dual out muffler with 2 inch pipe from there exiting behind the rear wheels. I like the sound. Not loud but a nice growl.

I don't know much about the early A bodys, but for a 67-up 108" wheelbase duster or 67-69 cuda,a 16" body muffler is hard to fit. I recomend a 14" body Walker "super turbo". they are a good compromise between noise and performance.

Your proposed system looks pretty good but consider reducing the tailpipe size down to 2 inch or even 1 7/8.

A smaller tailpipe really helps noise control and does not hurt performance, seeing that the exhaust gases have cooled (contracted) a good amount before getting to the tailpipe.

Oog. Never again for me -- too much rap/drone.

(This is why you post on a public forum -- multiple opinions from which to choose.)

Looks like I got a 4x9x16......Made in the USA. And it's not red :P

I'm guessing an 18" will work, unless the pipe bender tells me otherwise.

Which one did you wind up going with?

I'm doing the stock type.

I'm still trying to figure out if the 18" dimension advertised includes the stub fittings for in/out. If that's true then the case should be 16" like what is already there. Looks like it should fit even with the 2" tailpipe that has to immediately bend up and over the axle

What's the Walker or Goerlich (or other brand) number of the muffler you bought?

Haven't "shelled" out the $$ yet but so far (I'm still looking) I found This and This one and This one.
Thus far, the Walker # I came up with is a 21200.
I've yet to find the actual dimensions on it but it is listed for a Jeep Wrangler 93-95 so I am assuming is that it is no longer than the 3 I linked to.

Goerlich # for same vehicle (Jeep)700190 and 6536.
Haven't been able to get dimensions/detailed description on those either.

Ought to work fine:

Body Configuration : Center Inlet - Offset Outlet
Body Diameter : 4¼" × 9¾"
Overall Length : 19¼"
Muffler Inlet I.D. : 2¼"
Muffler Outlet I.D. : 2¼"
Muffler Shell Length : 16"
