Figured it was about time I posted some pictures of my truck. It's a 1982 D-150 "miser" with a stock 225 hooked to a 727. It has 3.25 gears outback and some of the weakest leaf springs I've ever seen on a pickup. ![]() ![]() This truck was bought new in 1982 by my uncle, and he picked this one because it was the only one at the dealership that had a slant six, even if it had nothing else. Shortly after he purchased it he added aftermarket A/C and a radio. Surprisingly it came from the factory with cruise control which has never worked very well thanks to the stiff throttle linkage. ![]() Everything on the truck is pretty much the way it left the factory. It was always garage kept and maintained very well. I need to replace the carpet on the inside and see if I can get some more door panels or repaint the current ones. The slant still runs like a champ, and has no problems keeping up with traffic with the A/C running. The only real problem I've had with it is the poor fuel mileage. This truck has never gotten over 14MPG since it left the factory. I'm currently in the process of removing the lean burn and replacing with a conventional distributor and HEI. Once the ignition system is up and going and I can make sure all the parts "jive" I am going to swap my supersix setup onto it. Other things on the to do list are, replace the factory leaf springs or install some serious helper springs, add a front swaybar, and track down some door panels. I'm also looking to add some soundproofing inside the truck and inside the doors to quieten down the significant amount of roadnoise this truck has. Up front I'm installing an electric fan to get rid of the factory "flyswatter" which made more noise than the engine. |

Nice truck! I would check and see if you don't have a factory clutch fan and that the clutch has seized up. |

Something's not right. I have an 84 Miser with Holley 2300 and dual Dutra duals, and my truck got over 19 mpg on a trip from Knoxville to Philadelphia and back. Yours is automatic, but still it should do better than that. Otherwise, you have a really nice starting point! ![]() |

Oh I know what's wrong with this truck, it's called Lean Burn/Holley 1945.Otherwise, you have a really nice starting point! ![]() Quote: I would check and see if you don't have a factory clutch fan and that the clutch has seized up.
No clutch fan, just the same direct drive six bladed fly swatter my Duster had.

Interesting. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if removing the lean-burn system improves your fuel economy. Heck, on a stock truck I actually recommend keeping the one barrel carb. |

It's kind of hard to resist the urge of that extra power from the super six. I know it REALLY woke up my Duster when I installed it on that car. |

Check out Aggressive Ted's build and see just what you can do with a one barrel carb. The slant really doesn't flow much air and a single barrel carb can feed a pretty healthy motor. |

Actually I've been following Agressive Ted's build. Very impressive to say the least. I've found his research on advance curves for the slant six to be very helpful. |

I took some engine pics tonight. I'm still waiting on a timing chain cover gasket to arrive. Ordered one from Rockauto since by the time I go to my local NAPA store, order the gasket, pay the freight since it always has to come from out of state for some stupid reason, go home, drive back, and get the gasket three days later I could have ordered one online without all of that hassle. Note the aftermarket A/C setup. It actually works very well, and the York compressor is much smoother than the "V-twin" Chrysler unit on my Duster. This truck also has one of those infamous two piece aluminum manifolds. ![]() ![]() Reed, this why I want to get rid of my 1945. ![]() The throttle shaft endplay is so sloppy that the carb body is eating into the throttle plate, and the idle tube was so loose that whenever I slammed on brakes the truck wouldn't idle for a month. I staked it back in the best I could, but it's still bent (I didn't do it). I'm trying real hard but this turd ain't taking a shine too well. Lucky for me I've got a perfectly good super six setup. |

Cut me some slack Jack, I'll be swappin' once the HEI jives with the rest of my engine. |

Hey Jeb! Did I tell ya it was good to have you back? ![]() ![]() BTW: Reed is very helpful about this type deal. He tried his hardest to help me with advice as I tried to ditch my Lean Burn and install an HEI set up on my '83 D150. Unfortunately, I'm dumb as a box of rocks and haven't figured it out yet. ![]() ![]() I'll get back around to fiddling with it someday... ![]() |

Oh man, "Cut me some slack, Jack." That reminds me of a scene form one of the best comedy movies ever made: Jive talkin'. |
