Post subject:  Engine temperature

On the way back from inspection today, I noticed that the temp was running high. Just the high side of normal. Thermo is opening (I think) and working, gauge is moving fine, but if I remember correctly, I have a 190 in there. Ok, whatever they sold me at pep boys...dont judge, it's a half a mile down the road and it's where I get oil, air fresheners, etc. Do I need a different temp thermo? I think dan's tuneup thread said a 185, but has anyone used anything lower than that?

Stupid question, I know, but one right answer and a half an hour of work might solve this.

190 should be fine in there for year round driving. Might be a dumb question, but how's the coolant level?

Slants like a 180 stat. Are you having any temperature related problems?

My old 305 chevy originally had a 195* thermostat and would ping even after months of advance curve tuning. I swapped to a 180 thermostat and the ping went away. Just a thought.
