Post subject:  Exhaust questions

I'm getting ready to finally get rid of the shobby exhaust work that a previous owner left me with, and I have some questions.

My plan is to go with dutra duals 2" pipe 6-8' back into a Y-pipe, then a 2.25" pipe back to the muffler, and finally 2" out to the back. It seems this is pretty much the standard recommendation so that's what I'm going for.

For muffler selection I'm leaning toward a Dynomax Super Turbo, per Joshua Skinner's recommendation in another thread. But I'm open to suggestions, however I'm not interested in a huge muffler debate, but would love to hear clips of mufflers others have used.

This brings us to the questions... I was quoted $350-400 for work and pipe, does that sounds about right, or maybe a bit high?

From what I've read mandrel bends are really only for really high performance builds so I'm going to go with standard bends, unless someone wants to weigh in here.

How important is it to have equal length pipes from the DDs to the Y-pipe? Or any other considerations I should be thinking about with the DDs into a Y-pipe?

Is there a recommended intake/exhaust gasket?

Also, I've read about opening up the manifold flanges to 2.25" or larger, has anyone done this with the DDs?

Lastly, once I get my DDs on there, should I be worried about running it 5 mins to the shop without exhaust hooked up? The shop is literally next door, but I have to drive around the block to get it in there. I'm mostly concerned about all the heat that will be produced in the engine compartment and around my block-to-ground cable.

Any other advice is much appreciated.

350 to 400 for exhaust is a fair price in my book i had duels put on my 79 chevy with a stright six and it was $378 with chrome tips provided by the shop and i provided the muffler it was like $95. If ya think about it, it took a lot of practice to get good at running exhaust(have you ever tryed to peice up your own exhaust? its not fun) so you are realy paying for experince.

Both Jegs and Summit have ready made dual pipe exhaust systems (headers->back) with turbo-style mufflers for V8 A-bodies, within the same price range, sounds like a normal price.

The jegs kit for V-8 is 219.00  Thats with mufflers, all hardware, and 2.5" mandrel bent pipes. I wonder if they would sell just the drivers side pipe/muffler for us slant guys?! That would be cool.

Buy it, use half of it, and sell the other half to a board member. Or get someone to go halfsies with you on the purchase price.

Your'e absolutely right, raPom! I did not think about the unassembled systems.

Actually, if you take a closer look at the Jegs photo here, the system is made up from separate identical parts for both sides, so in practical terms, you get two SL6 2.5" exhaust systems for $219! If they had made it with 2 1/4" pipes, that would be a VERY good price!

Olaf the parts are not the same for both sides. Look at the long pipes the first curve is opposite (would need to be cut and rewelded to make both side same.

Richard, your eyes are far better than mine! (you have to stop dying your hair white, just because you want to look older!)

I would say that it is not a bad price, even if you have to fabricate the part connecting to the old system headers or downpipe.

I'm hoping they will sell me the one side, then I lust have the local exhaust shop make a down pipe for me. Should be able to have the complete system for about 200 bux.

Does your local auto parts store sell prebent tubing? It might be cheaper to buy generic prebent corners and straight pipe than buying this system.

Just got this back from Jegs:

Thank you for your question and interest in Jegs High Performance.

The unfortunate answer to your question is that we do not manufacture this exhaust system part number 555-30500 we simply purchase it from an out side source and re-label it for sale in our Jegs product line, therefore we can not offer to sell you half of the kit. In your case you may be ahead to have the exhaust system custom built for your application or if it is cheaper purchase our whole kit and have a spare muffler and patch pipes for other projects.

Cudos to Jegs for a prompt answer, even if the answer was not the one you wanted!

I agree,it was cool that they got back to me so quickly. I am still thinking about buying the kit...I mean it would be hard for me to get a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system for anywhere near what that kit goes for....then maybe someone else would want the other half, even if you had to modify it, 100 bux for an almost complete exhaust is a killer deal.
