I saw this the other day at the parts store...didn't tear the package apart, but it looked like a cable with some sort of black plastic wheel. Anyone ever installed a manual choke on a s/6? Easy? Stupid? Difficult? I know that everyone will point me to the electronic choke kit, but the manual one is $11, and it's a pain in the balls lifting the hood to close the choke for a cold start, so I have to do something...

Easy enough job, long as your carb isn't missing anything. Maybe have to make a slight mod? I put a 350 holley on my car and it took 30 seconds to install the manual choke (comes with linkage already). |

I don't think it's missing anything at all, it just isn't going back to closed (or open...I always get confused and turned around) when it's cold. So I guess the new spring is sprung, or the linkage is sloppy or something. Do you run it through an existing hole in the firewall or make a new one or what?

Those manual-choke kits are mostly meant for carbs that have a black plastic integral choke thermostat as original equipment. They're pretty "backwoods" (cobbled up) on a setup like the slant-6 has. Much better if your choke thermostat has failed: one of the Electric choke kits. |

Ahhhh...I figured you'd say that, but now I know, and knowing...I'll be getting one of the Electric Choke kits then. How long does the install take? Just a rough guesstimate...1 hr? 4 hrs? Looks to me like it's just bolting the kit with the link rod down to the place on the engine where the spring used to live. |

It'll take you between 15 minutes and an hour depending on how quickly you work and how pretty you want your install to be. |
