Post subject:  Intermittent sputtering while driving

I have a '80 225 Volare (not lean burn) with a 1945 single barrel carb. In case it matters it also has the HEI upgrade which has performed without error for the 4 months since installation.

Now, I have noticed in the past that when I take a turn tight, or accelerate hard when turning from a stop I get a sputtering that starts about 5 seconds after the turn and lasts for about 5-10 secs. Car has never died. I chalked this up to needing to adjust the float level and was "gonna get to that". Now, however, I am experiencing a sputter while driving at normal speeds on a straightaway seemingly at random. The sputtering can last for over 10 seconds at times and just began happening 2 days ago... maybe three times in total. The car has not died from it though.

Am I right in thinking the carb is the likely culprit on both counts and is due for a rebuild and cleaning or is there somewhere else I should start for this new sputtering problem? I have considered that it could be bad gas that I got on my last fill-up from a Citgo I had only gone to once before, but I'm thinking the chances of that are slim. I can't vouch for the condition of the inside of the carb.

Could be that fuel pump is not delivering enough fuel to supply engine’s needs under acceleration, or perhaps fuel filter is plugged. Where this is becoming progressively worse the fuel pump may be on the way out. Also check oil for strong smell of gasoline, or high level.

Dose accelerator pump provide a good strong squirt? If not maybe its time for a carburetor rebuild.

Thanks for the tip. Fortunately I have the original carb on standby that was working well when I removed it. I'm going to swap out carbs and see if there is any difference and go from there.

I should add that I replaced the fuel pump about 3 months ago and the fuel filter as well. I suppose that further points me in the direction of the carb.
