Post subject: | hub and drum bond? |
I'm taking the front end apart on my car and find the drum is swagged, pressed on the hub at the lugs. Never ran into this before. Always had clips or star washers holding the drum on. I can separate them but what I want to know is there a proper way to do this and should I do it at all? I am thinking I will have to if I replace the drums. I intend to replace the drums but don't know if I would have to swage them back on. Can't really see why. No place for them to go once it's all bolted up. Thanks for any help. Dennis |

Do not remove the drums fron the hub, without cutting the swage. You will ruin the drum, hub, or both. I used to have a cutter for that, and a swagging tool, but they disapeared many, many years ago. Every tool suplier discontinued these tools many years ago. Cut or grind the swage, to remove. You can get new studs, if needed. I do not reswage. |

Thanks! Kinda figured as much but thought I should consult some experts before going off half cocked. I have several ways I can get them separated since I manage a machine shop. |

Last ones I did, I cut the studs off and then center punched the stud and used a large drill bit to remove the swage. Of course new studs are needed! |

New studs are available, however they don't fit! New studs are supplied by both Doorman and Raybestos they are the same stud made by the same manufacturer the box says made in the USA the studs are the same, even to the markings on the head of the stud they are identical. They are about 6 thou. too small. If you still want to try it first, find a shop that still does the swaging then start at the parts stores that have the studs bring your micrometer and start measuring the serated part of the stud, that is where the problem lies, that is where they are out of specification find the closest ones to spec. the largest diameter ones, go through a lot of them we had to go to several suppliers before we found 10. Then with your studs, drums (new drums are available) and hubs in hand go to the "swage machine shop" and have them installed. Chances are the studs are too small if the shop has had experience with this before they will know that the backs of the studs must have a spot type of weld on each stud. Yes, each one needs to be to keep the hub and drum in balance chances are that you will also need to have your new drums turned also most of them will be out of round, believe me and good luck. Even better would be to take this opportunity to swap the car over to 11" discs and live safer and easier. Lou |

Since your managing a machine shop, have one of your machinists increase the knurl until the stud meets spec. CJ |

That's what I plan on doing but just bring them up to a slip fit diameter and not a press fit. Is it really necessary for a press fit? Thanks, Dennis |
