Post subject:  What A/C belt do I use for a York setup?

my 63 Dart 225 has an aftermarket York compressor A/C setup. The car has no power steering. Does anyone know the part number for the belt I need for this setup? I went to my local auto parts place, and they had a belt for a 63 Dart 225 w/A/C, but I think it's for the stock Chrysler V2 setup, which this is not.

This setup has a pulley mounted underneath the compressor on an arm bolted to the compressor bracket. The pulley swivels out - the one part of the system that is designed as a tensioner. Can anyone help?

Thanks, in advance!

There is no belt listing for that system. It is one of several different aftermarket systems. The easiest way to get the correct belt, is to take an old belt, that is too long. Then cut it, wrapit around the pulleys, bring the cut ends around to each other, and mark them when the belt is tight. Thake this to a part store and they can give you a close match. You might have to try one or two different belts, but this will get you close.

Gotcha, thanks Charlie. I will do that.

I have a couple pages that I think are from whatever booklet came with the install of this system. They're dated 1974 at the bottom. They've got an engine diagram with belt illustration, as well a list of the parts the system uses, and some numbers, but for the belt, all they list is "A-50", and I assume this is a number from the maker of this system, the brand name of which is Mark V Ultra.

If I was re-doing the system completely, I'd probably remove, and go with the parallel-flow condenser, as well as the Sanden setup, which you mentioned, would eliminate all vibration, and make the system more efficient. I'd also swap out the evaporator unit inside the car with an original cool-air that i have. But, in the interest of saving $, I'm keeping the setup as-is for now.

For anyone else who has this same system setup and cares to know, after about four tries, I ended up with a Gates belt 9510 13A1295. Measures 1/2" x 51 3/8". Snug fit, but definitely the right belt length.

the A 50 is the standard designation for a 1/2 inch belt 52 inches long. Gates
or any manufacturer will have a belt with this number or a cross reference
depending on the type (or construction) of the belt. You can go to the Gates
site and get all kinds of useful information.

Wish I'd known that when going into my mom and pop auto store. I bet that would have helped. But silly me, I thought I was so smart for figuring out that that number was a maker's designation only. Meh.

If and when you get eady for the Sanden upgrade, let me know. I have mount kits available. You may, or may not be able to use a Sanden adapter on your existing mount. On some "York" mounts the compressor sits too low, and the adapter mount/Sanden will hit the manifold. I have seen some that will work, and some that wont.
