i just assembled the timing cover, and oil pan, and im kinda on edge of using the original hardware i installed, with no lockwashers. i did use a drop of blue lock tite on them, but i have a feeling i didn't clean the holes in the block as well as i should have. would it be safe to buy all new hardware, and replace each bolt one by one, or will that disrupt the seal, i used locktites grey rtv on both pan and cover. i would just hate to have these things come loose later on. |

timing chain, valve cover, oil pan bolts are not stressed anywhere close to yield,,used ones should be good as new, having the correct torque and tightening the sheet metal covers in a pattern that allows the cover to straighten out as it is tightened into place is important. for the pattern,, start in the middle and work out, crossing from top to bottom, like the pattern used on cylinder head bolts for the torque,, I would pre torque to 50 to 75% of final,,using the inside to out side pattern, then go to final, again inside to out side pattern as far as loctite,, should not be necessary, will made the next dis assembly a tougher job. These normally are flange head bolts, don't think lock washers are used here Thread cleanliness is necessary to get the right torque. if you have some doubt about the cleanliness of the threads, take the bolts out one by one,, flush the hole with your favorite rust penetrant,, blow it out with compressed air,,also clean the bolt threads and tighten it back up. With a very light lube on the threads, the bolt should thread in using your fingers, timing chain covers and oil pans gaskets are a real job to get right once the motor is in,, at the price of those two gaskets new,, I would take it apart, be sure all is good,, then put it back together |
