Post subject:  fouling plugs

i have a 64 dart... electronic ignition
this car was off the road for along time..once i finally got her on the road she was running a bit rough-

i tuned up the engine NGK ZFR5N plugs, adjusted the valves(found some tight intakes)still running roughish
i sent the carb off to get rebuilt(1barrel)

got the carb back and installed.. it ran like a top for a few days... then it started to stumble at an idle and run rough in all rpms, when ya stop on it she's dumping black smoke out the tail pipe.. running rich obviously-

last night i rechecked the valves(ok), peeked into the distributor cap(new) that looked perfect..ballast resistor(new) fine. i had an extra coil laying around so i switched it out.. cleaned the plugs up, checked the gap(fine) and put back in..new fuel filter...
i also checked the needle and seat.. looks new(as it should the carb just got rebuilt)

needless to say the problem is still there...

could something be wrong with the carb rebuild??
any ideas or suggestions??????????????

thanks-

rich

Are the plugs oily or gassy

This looks like a fuel problem. I suspect that your newly rebuilt carburetor has gotten a load of dirty fuel and has pluged up the works.

Any time a car sits for six months or more, all kind of mayhem occurs in the fuel system if it was not drained, or treated before storage such as; rust, gum, varnish formation, soft hoses degrading, and a build up of corrosion particles that can make their way to the carburetor when car is put back into service.

I’m betting that the float valve has stuck partly open because of small chunk of crud lodged in it causing a high fuel level making a rich condition, and or plugged up internal passages causing stumbling or lean running above idle from particulate migrating from tank.
