I thought I posted something on this once, but can't seem to find it.

I have a 65 Dart with an 85 /6. should the spacer on the spark plugs be removed? mine are.

also, anyone happen to know how I figure out if my car is a 170 or 270? it has GT emblems on it, but it's a 2 door sedan.

Yes, remove the metal ring washers from the spark plugs before installing them in a 1965 slant-6 cylinder head. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Check the number stamped at the top of the block, below the frontmost spark plug, inboard of the coil/alternator bracket, facing the sky. You will probably have to scrape away grease to read it. Let us know what it says and we'll be able to tell you about your engine.

If the cylinder head is 1985 you should have 5/8" hex tapered seat spark plugs. Do you have tubes in the cylinder head surrounding the plugs or is it just cast iron?

My understanding is this. The early heads have spark plug tubes, these tubes provide the gasket surface for the spark plug. Spark plugs for these heads usually come with crushable washers for use as gaskets, however using them with spark plug tubes would cause a bad seal. So remove those.

The spark plugs that are acquired for later heads (those without spark plug tubes) don't come with washers because they are tapered to provide a good seal. Hence no washer to remove anyway.

So the easy rule is, if it has a washer, remove it. Following this rule, if you have an '85 slant head, the correct plugs don't come with washers. Which wouldn't make sense since you are asking the question, unless you don't have the plugs yet or have the wrong plugs or if the head isn't an '85.

To those who know far more than I do, is there any scenario where the rule (if it has a washer, remove it) doesn't apply?

okie dokie! I'm going to see this as a good thing, because this means I could be driving a whole new car (after I break the news to my girlfriend that I have to go to the "toy store" for new plugs) and now I have an excellent reason to play with my slant today!

In that case try NGK Part # 6630 or DENSO Part # 5035. Autolite has gone to sh&t so skip those. No Bosch either. And no multi-ground-electrode nonsense.

That's the gap, yes. Denso and NGK should both be accurately pre-gapped.

ugh... now we have another issue. of course.

so, I went and asked for both plug numbers you gave me and found there to be no washer. I then had them grab plugs for an 85 /6 225 3.7 and they came back with others, still without washers.

I've looked everywhere on this and all I know for sure is that you don't remove the washers pre 63, remove them from 63-74, but then what?

I have no idea what vehicle my engine came out of. I looked for the engine ID stuff stamped behind the alternator by the first plug, facing the sky... and there is no anything facing the sky. the cast part has nothing that points up. it just goes up and down.

the stamped number on the carb side is 330-(1 or I).

help!!! am I nuts?

No tubes, the plugs have a tapered seal NO washers needed or supplied.

The numbers given are for a peanut plug head. They won't have washers on them.
You have a taper type plug.
