Post subject:  Timing chain/gear issues

I swear my brother's van is cursed. Last weekend I got the transmission problem fixed (three years and five transmissions later), but the van died as soon as my brother got it back to his house. Some quick over-the-phone diagnostic work has revealed that the van has either had a catastrophic camshaft failure, or the timing chain has broken, or a timing gear has had the teeth shear off. I am going up to his house this coming Saturday to tear it partially apart and diagnose the problem.

The timing set currently in the van now is an old Mopar Performance double roller set I bought back in the late 90s. It was the second to last MP set in the dealer parts network. What ticks me off is that it has well under even 50k miles on it. I don't know why it would have failed with such little mileage on it.

What is the current recommendation for a decent timing set for a street driven slant in a truck? Part numbers?

Is it possible for the camshaft gear holddown bolt to loosen enough under the timing chain cover to allow the cam gear to come off the locator pin and freewheel around the holddown bolt?

Crap. If I install a new timing set I am going to have to degree the cam. Argh.

Oh, come on, Reed, you can't fool us!

You love fiddling with those old Mopars!

Olaf.

I do love fiddling with old Mopars, but degreeing a camshaft makes my brain hurt.

Awesome, thanks. Josh Skinner actually walked me through it on the phone the last time I did it, and I knew how to do it then, but that was over a year ago and my brain leaks, so I am not 100% on the process anymore. I will review your article and see if that helps.

Check the ballast resistor. Image

Verified no distributor rotor turning when motor is cranked and no fuel is pumping when motor is cranked. Believe me, if I thought I could replace the ballast resistor instead of swapping out a cam or timing set, I would. This is a no camshaft rotation problem. Cause of the no camshaft rotation is still to be determined- either busted cam, busted timing chain, stripped cam/crank gear(s), or loose cam gear bolt allowing cam gear to pop off the locator pin. I am really hoping it is just a loose cam gear bolt. :(

I meant, check the ballast resistor for the brain-leaks problem.

Ohhhhhhh, see? Brain leakage.

Reed,

I have one of those Direct Connection double rollers on my good engine. Let us know how well it held up.

Will do Ted. The more I think about it, the more I suspect the cam gear bolt came loose allowing the cam gear to wobble its way off the cam stud. At least that is what I hope it is. I'll be getting into the motor on Saturday and will post pictures.

Also, I found my ballast resistor. I rarely wear a belt so I had to dig a bit through the closet to see it it was OK.

Is the Hughes 6406S a decent timing set?

Well, I'd have to go look for it but I have a factory chain that I bought before I bought the double rollers I have. If you are looking for cheap I'd give you that timing chain (factory style from O'Reilly) that I have, and heck, I'd even pay the shipping to get it to you since I'll never use it.

If you're interested, I'll go look for it, but if you can't afford to wait on it I won't bother.

I appreciate the offer. Can you get it to the Seattle area by Friday? I'll pay shipping to 98466.

Reed, I just went out searching for the timing set and couldn't find it. I know exactly what box it's in, and so I know it has to be in my storage unit which is unfortunately 350 miles away :(.

I thought I had moved it down here already but it looks like I haven't got to it yet.

Good luck with the fix Reed! As soon as I get that box of parts down here I have many things to offer to the forum here.
