Post subject:  water pump

I tried seaching for water pump, but nothing came up pertaining what I wanted.
I went to clean up and check out the water pump(covered in Orange silicone) and noticed there is a thin plate that went between the pump and block, and can't take it off because the impeller is pressed on. What are the steps of cleaning, checking and installing this style pump. As of water pumps I've only messed with old chevys. And vws are aircooled ;)

The water pump uses two gaskets one an each side of the steel plate. Fun part is working a new gasket behind the plate (not hard to do). The steel plate can be moved around to let you clean the old sealant off.

Do you put RTV on both gasket faces? or only on the block side?
That metal plate has very little clearance from the impeller!
Are there better directions on installing a slant WATER PUMP somewhere on this site?(I'm a GM convert also...) -Thanks

Danarchy- the scans I posted are form the factory service manual and are the best instructions you will find for installing a slant six water pump. The scans also contain instructions for a water pump flow check. The slant six cooling system just isn't that complicated.

Unless the water pump or the pump housing is warped, you don't need ANY RTV sealant on ANY gasket on the water pump.

I like to use Vaseline in case I make some kind of mistake or need to take it off again in the near future. That way you can prevent the gasket from tearing when removing.

You're right about RTV. It just makes a mess and should only be used when something isn't flat or on the intake to head gasket to make sure it seals.

WOW! No RTV! The guy that put on the current water pump must not have known that, it's caked on so thick I didn't even know there was a metal plate inbetween until I got my New pump.
Reed- The factory directions just seemed very common sense, I thought there might be some trick to it.
I ordered extra gaskets when I ordered the New pump, just in case.

Nope, that is one the great things about the slant six- it is a very simple and durable motor. Having worked on numerous GM cars myself, I can see why you would think the factory slant six instructions didn't give enough detail. However, the truth is that slant sixes really are that simple and straightforward. That is one of the reasons why we all love them.

I do remember doing my water pump several years ago can't recall it being difficult and definitely did not use RTV. If ever used never need a copious amount of RTV; always use sparingly!

I am in the process of removing my Volare's water pump and installing a new one. I have had an intermittent grinding/whirring noise from under the hood, and I've narrowed it down to the water pump as the most likely culprit. I did use RTV before on the water pump, years ago. I guess I just assumed that I needed to use it. Per the advice in this thread, I am not going to use RTV, I've just got to scrape off all of that old gunk first.

okay so cleaning all the gunk off of the water pump, orange silicone, and excess amount of rusty bits, i have come to find that the plate is heavily pitted. so it looks to me i would be better off with a different pump. what are my choices of a good pump. i know this one isnt a real mopar one, its got no numbers, and a goofy symbol.

i hit up the guys i worked for a couple years ago parts store called TOPS Auto Supply. i can get a 32 dollar GATES pump (new, not rebuilt) my guess is they actually dont manufacture them like they do all their rubber? any better options? NOS pump laying around somewhere?

i bit the bullet and spent 32 bucks on the gates pump. seems like a decent unit. the housing is a smooth finish, no casting flash anywhere inside or out, the plate came cad plated, which im sure would help with rusting out as bad as my previous pump. impeller feels how it should. life time warranty... we will see how well it holds up.

also i will use absolutely no rtv, if all you guys are fine with out, sounds good to me

I bought the Gates pump also,no issue with it at all. I did use alittle RTV(old chevy habit).The pump I took off was a much Heavier Casting, but had the same style impeller. About 2 weeks after I put it on I spun a crank bearing, so it will have to wait for further testing!

after further inspection, i will be needing a little smear of rtv on the block side, the block has small pits outlining the pump mating surface.
