Post subject:  Reinstallation of original cam

I have given up on trying to get my comp cam tuned in. the motor was rebuilt about 4K miles ago from the bottom up and i have tried virtually everything including dizzy recurve and loosening the valves. plus the head is leaking oil AGAIN and i am gonna try one more time to fix that as well.

my question is would the original cam be ok to reinstall? the motor and the cam only had about 75K miles on it before it was rebuilt. The springs and lifters were replaced at that time also. Do you suppose they would be ok or do i need to spend some more cash and replace those also?

Any advice is appreciated. Incidentally this is a solid lifter motor out of a 75 duster

Original cam should be fine, but you will either need to put the original lifters back on their original lobes on the cam or buy new lifters.use lots of break in lube on the lifter bottoms and cam lobes.

thanks Reed

i had the option of rebuilding the hydra motor on my 87 1/2 ton but thought i could get a little better performance by rebuilding the solid lifter motor i had sitting around. (plus i always liked the way an old solid lifter slant sounded). now i am coming around to agreeing with you re: staying with the hydralic set up

i will get the new lifters and reinstall with the existing springs. all prayers re: once and for all fixing the #$%%&* oil leak around the head would be appreciated.

Wait a minute, are you saying you want to put the hydraulic cam in what was a solid lifter motor? If so, there are a few other parts that must be changed, and you have to address the potential difference in the rearmost rocker arm shaft bolt hole. See HERE. You must use hydraulic lifters, hydraulic pushrods, the hydraulic rocker arm shaft, and hydraulic rocker arms. You may or may not need to drill out the rearmost rocker arm shaft bolt hole depending on what cylinder head you are using.

As ar as fixing the oil leak around the head, I now always put a very thin bead of RTV sealant along the edge of both sides of the head gasket below the spark plugs on the outboard side of the opening for the lifter gallery. This seems to be a common place for leaks to show up.

no i will be reinstalling the original mechanical cam with new lifters

i was just saying in hindsight i may have been better off to just rebuild the hydra motor that came with my 1987 pickup

i will try again re: the head leak

thanks for the advice
