I thought I saw a thread that stated a way to tell a 170 from a 225, but I can't find it. Oh well. Is there an easy way to determine whether I have a 170 or 225? I think it was something about the length of a hose, but I dot remember.

The water pump bypass hose which goes to the cylinder head is only about an inch long on a 170, but about 3" long on a 225. The block casting number is different too.

Wasn't most of the 225 blocks blue and the 170 and 198 blocks red? At least here in the states? There are probably exceptions to this if different paints where available at different points in manufacture. As I seem to recall a thread talking about even green and silver painted blocks.

Mine is orange. I'll have to check the casting # that's on the side.

170s and 225s were both red through 1968. The 170 was phased out in favor of the 198 in 1970 and were blue same as the 225s. Color is year specific and sometimes application specific as older trucks had yellow engines.

Dan listed most of the options. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... 7933#67933
