Post subject:  Draining Brake Fluid

Just received the last of my ordered brake parts from rockauto. (including master cylinder, drums, etc...)

my current rear brakes are in very bad shape and the fluid looks to be very old (cloudy, off-colored)

I want to get started, but question is, what is the best technique to expel all the old brake fluid?? do this before removing the old m/c and rear brakes?

Turkey baster to empty the master cylinder (or just leave the cap on it and unbolt and remove; it won't make much of a mess). Likewise go ahead and just remove the old hydraulics and discard them. Once all the new parts are bolted in place, flush the system through with fresh brake fluid til it runs clear from all four corners, then bleed.

Once all the old cylinders are removed, a quick shot of compressed air at one end of the hydraulic system's hard line(s), does a good job of purging-out any old brake fluid.
Be sure to tie a rag onto the other end of the hard line... or doing this will make a mess.
(warning: you do not want brake fluid getting on any painted surfaces)

Also, remember to bench bleed the master cylinder before filling up with new fluid for the lines. See earlier posts on the subject.

Not bench bleeding may create problems with air bubbles, which will be near impossible to get rid of later.
