hi i have a 1974 dodge swinger with a 225 and i want to buy a seperate slant 6 to build up and to drop in my car what year and what do you reccomend me to do? I am 17 and my budget is around collectively 500-700 dollars? how and how hard/much is a turbo i really dont understand that? i would like about 200 or more hp thanks |

I would recomend running a blow thru turbo and a TBI FI system. That would be cool. Thats what I may do, depends on what santa brings me this year. |

Turbocharging an engine that was never produced with a turbo can get pretty complex. There is usually some serious fabrication and welding involved, as well as some hard-core parts scrounging and pure luck in finding what you need in good shape. I suspect that your $500 - $700 budget won't cover it. I know, the magazines do it in a day for $12.50 ... I'd suggest you put that money into preparing the car for the change, doing things which will give you better performance with or without a turbo and won't have to be undone for the turbo when you have the big bucks and time available. Hotter ignition, port matching, mild porting in the head, maybe larger valves, stout bottom end, timing gear ... The turbo will change your exhaust system, so plan any changes there carefully. How are your brakes? Suspension? Tires/wheels? Oh, and a book or two on turbocharging! Personally, I'm looking forward to doing a multiport fuel injection conversion. Guess I had better get my HEI setup in , and do something about that single-pot master cylinder first. Good luck with whatever you do! |

ok well now i am at cross roads i am 17 and i like the slant 6 but i want the power of an eight? if anyone can tell me exaclty what to do for around 500-700 dollars with the six i'll do that but if not i guess i am putting in a eight. |

Getting the power of a eight from a SL6 takes some innovation and serious thought; and yes a fair investment. The thought and innovation part is why most of us who are into SL6 performance stay with it. Quite frankly if I wanted to put a Hemi or even a V12 into my car I could, but that's not the point. It's "thinking out of the box" that's the challenge and fun. I would suggest using you money to do some of the things that the previous poster outlined. You still won't have the power of a V8, but if you concentrate on some handling upgrades you'll have a well balanced package and be able to out handle almost any V8 from that era. Then save up some money, study about EFI and turbo or superchargers and plan your project. Don't expect this to happen overnight though. I bought my car before you were born and am just now into my turbo project. I would have gone through a lot of V8's in that time! Bob D |

I can say that a conversion to a V8 will cost you more then $500-$700 unless you can find a good running "doner car" with all the parts you need. As for what to do for a stock SL6 to help it, here is my list: -Electronic Ignition with a fast advance curve. -Super Six 2 bbl set-up. -Cylinder head work including "pocket porting" and milling to increase compression. -Antisway bars along with good tires and wheels.
