Post subject:  Water Injection

Just found this bit about water injection in a book:

"A system that injects a small amount of water or alcohol-water mixture into the air-fuel mixture as it passes through the carburetor. Theoretically , as the water evaporates it should cool the incoming charge, which then becomes denser, leading to higher volumetric efficiency. In turn, this should lead to improved performance and economy, and allow the use of lower octane fuel because the cooler charge suppresses detonation."

Is the idea or theory that the cooled charge increases the density of the fuel volume allowing for less fuel to be used in conjunction with fuel displacement from water?
Volumetric efficiency being improved performance and fuel displacement from water being improved economy?

Just a few thoughts.

this has been used for years .....best setup I have see uses the high vac port on carb, doesnot draw at idle
also keeps the carbon cleaned out
keep on roddin'

Water injection is very good for reducing combustion temperatures. This means higher compression and leaner mixtures can be used. I am highly skeptical of volumetric efficiency gains as water vapor displaces oxygen which is needed to burn fuel and make power. If you are able to run fully optimized timing and air/fuel mixture on your current octane fuel then water injection will gain you no power or fuel economy. If you are knock limited on timing or mixture then water injection can help. Water injection can also allow an increased compression ratio which will provide a power and economy increase. It's not the water injection itself which provides the gains, but the water injection substituting for higher octane fuel.

Our member 'aggressive Ted' has been running water injection or a long time, make a search for his post on the subject, and go to his site 74 Dodge Dart Swinger to view the pics.

Another point is that I can run a little more timing for better fuel mileage with out pinging. Like Josh mentioned, the advantages are you can run lower octane, leaner jetting and more timing resulting in some pretty good mileage. The key is to keep the engine and intake manifold warm, so stick with the 195 stat, heat deflector and 16 pound cap. In winter I switch to a 205 stat.

A side benefit is it keeps the head and valves clean for a crisp idle. No popping sounds from the exhaust.

A 1920 Holley Economaster from a taxi cab. The air cleaner is so I can run cold ram air instead of sucking in hot engine bay heat......

So the cold ram air helps with economy then?

Yes, it is about the same performance gain as going to an electric fan.

Do you know where to get that plate that the tube hooks up to? I'm switching to a super 6 soon so i'm going to have the same air cleaner.

Sure, it is a very simple bulkhead connector that I found in the RV department at our local hardware store. It is with the other RV sewer fittings. Just buy a short 6" long section of pipe to slide into it. The stock MOPAR air intake hose will fit right over it.

Some fancy, more expensive versions: Cold air intake ducts.
