No one officially has done this for street. A long while back I think Team Green experimented with a plate to adapt a Powerglide to a slant for racing thinking that eliminating the extra shift the A904 had would improve times...(I think I remember reading it didn't and the tranny was too long in the tooth for the slant and rear ratio to work right)...on a slant six? This same adaptor would work for running a 700R4, but for the price of all the same items, you can rebuild the A904 cheaper with better parts and it will still shift quicker... -D.Idiot |

Not true! There was a Duster featured in one of the old Slant Six News magazines that had a ton of custom work done to it, including adapting a Cadillac front wheel drive transmission and suspension to the slant six. It was turned into a utility body with a power rear window and bench seat and the cadillac front wheel drive but still had the slant six. I believe the name of the car was the Dustero X. I can dig out the issue and find it if anyone is interested. |

You might want to contact Quicktime. They have an adapter bellhousing for the T-5 trans. Since their adapters are "modular" and they have adapters for other engines for GM automatics, they might be able to help you out. I'm not sure, but I would look at a turbo 200R4. It is lighter and smaller then a 700R4 and might be a better choice with a slant in an "A" body. |

Wait, I stand corrected. It wasn't front wheel drive, but it was a GM 200R4. ![]() ![]() Slant six News, issue no. 57. |

I stand corrected, although it would be nice to know what happened to that "Ute" and how much street time it had...It looks like Bob's wife passed on back in 2009, and his grandson works for the only custom rod shop in the area. Bob made quite a few "customs" and restorations that are regulars in the area...but this duster/Ute hasn't shown up for the last decade at any mopar/rod shows locally... Good Article! -D.Idiot |

Nice pictures, looks very professional. I've often wondered what a factory Mopar El Ranchero type vehicle would be like. I like the idea of a 1959 El Belvedero to compete with the Chevy. |

The 200R4 is small enough to fit in an A body......but not the strongest box Forget a 4L80....way too big.... a 4L60 could be done with tunnel work. All these have the same bell pattern. If you are going to a chev box at least make it a T5. |

John, If you talk to Riley again, please ask if there's any discount for multiple (even 2) plates. I and others might be interested in that plate, and we could start a group buy. Thanks, Lou |

The 200R4 should have decent ratios; off the top of my head it's like 2.75/1.5/1/0.7. It's smaller than the 700R4, also. As for torque handling, it was used behind the GNX 3.8L turbo motor. Most likely not quite in the same shape as what you'd likely expect in the junkyard; but the capability is there. I'm not sure how much larger the 700R4 is, compared to the 200. But the gear ratios mimic the A833OD, and GM made lots of the 700's (used behind 4.3's, 5.0's and 5.7's). I forget if it's 1985 or 1987 that they got the last of the bugs out, but the later ones aren't bad, the only issue I know of is a sticky govenor (they tend to wind up pretty bad in first--no doubt in part from the 3.06:1 first gear). $625 seems kinda pricey, but if it's the first time they've jigged this up then I can see the cost. Still lots more cheaper than that GearVendors overdrive unit. |
