So it look like I'm gonna have to change my rings and I have a 70' Dodge Dart. I read in the haynes manual that you can remove the oil pan and unbolt the rods and push them thru the top with the head off. But it looks like a pain where the k member is. Is it easier to to pull the motor?

I am not sure you can get the pan off with the engine in, but I would just pull the engine. It is almost certainly not worth the hassle of working under the car with no room. You would still have to use a ridge reamer at the top of the bores to get the pistons out if you left the engine in.

My opinion, Rick

Yes, pull the engine.

Question: How many miles are on the (smoking??) engine?
If the engine has lots of miles, you would be better off getting a rebuilt engine and swapping that into the vehicle.
My 2 cents...

With respect to in-car engine rebuilds, there are two kinds of people: those who have never done it, and those who will never do it again. If you'll be doing internal engine work, you will save a lot of time and effort and wind up with a better job if you pull the engine.

Also, get rid of that Haynes book. It's full of errors and bad info and doesn't contain anywhere near as much info as you need to do much of anything. Get the three books, including the factory service manual, described in this thread.

I started to take apart my motor last night.

1. Head gasket was blown between cylinder 5&6 and also between cylinder 6 and the area for the pushrods.

2. The valve stem seals need replacement.

3. It looks like cylinder 6 is the one with the bad rings due to the wall of the cylinder being covered in oil.

What's the best way to clean the crud off the valves and other parts?
