You're going to have to excuse me for not knowing exactly what parts I'm discussing here, but... I noticed that there was a little sideways movement in some of my rockers on the main shaft that they all line up on. So, if you wiggle them from side to side, some stay still, but a couple move a little. Does that make sense? I'm wondering tension is normally holding them still, but that at some point in the stroke it lets off a little and would allow some travel. Any ideas? |

This is normal. On mechanical lifter slant sixes (all pre-1981 slant sixes) it is normal to have some side to side play on rocker arms with the corresponding lifter off the corresponding lobe of the cam. As the camshaft turns and pressure is put on the valve train, the small amount of slack is taken up and the rocker arm becomes tight against the rocker arm shaft. |

Sorry! I should've been more specific... it's an 85 block with an 81 head, so I have hydraulic lifters. Does that make a difference? |

Potentially. How much movement is "a little"? |

without actually going and measuring... I'd say really minimal. Just enough to rattle up against the bit next to it, which is solidly in place. I only noticed this when I took the cover off to look for the ID stamps on the head and everything looks solid enough that I'm not particularly suspicious of anything involving the rockers and most of them are halfway through their stroke and solid and I haven't turned the engine to see if the solid ones loosen up. |

I wouldn't worry about it. They are supposed to be loose enough to rotate and slide on and off the rocker arm. |

Sounds like normal spacing and slopage, not to worry. |
