I called comp cams today to see a about a nice streetable cam with a little extra oomp. Comp cams only makes 2 cams for the slant six one pretty much stock, # 2 will make more power and torque. So today I'm in the local parts store looking at their catalog 2 cams number 1 is stock replacement for cars number is a replacement for TRUCKS with the slant 6. :?
So we check prices the truck cam from comp cams is right at 200 dollars, Mellings replacement for a stock 225 truck cam is $99. pretty much same duration and same numbers from the book and computers, So my question is why couldn't I just replace my cam from my cam with a truck cam same 225 engine :? :? . Thanks in advance

Erson has some special cams that Doc developed with them.

Don't think there is special pricing anymore, but they will still have the specs.

Or even better, use Oregon Cams and build the cam I had ground by them. A little rumpety idle, but very torquey and likes to run really good in the 1400 to 3200 range. I detail it here: http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... highlight=

I am very happy with the cam, except for the rough idle on propane.

Oh, yeah, and save a lotta dough.

Does Oregon cams have the pattern for the MP244 exhaust lobe?

You can ask them. I don't really know. This engine's in a 4600 lb pickup, with 3.55 gears and 30 inch tall tires and I think it runs pretty darn good for what it is. If this were in a 3600 lb car with a 4 speed and headers, it would be one snappy and fun driver.

It's good that you're happy with your cam, but let's have some support, please, for the claim that it's "even better" than the ones Doug has put a lot of hours (um, years, actually) into developing.

The "even better" refers to saving some dough.

Actually, I've got two OCG cams. I'm not suffering from OPDG failures. After I finish rebuilding Linda's Engine, I'll yard the engine and take a look at the pump gear. Thinking of bumping the cam down a bit anyway. I've got an Erson 280 that should be a bit milder than the thumper I have in there now. I can toss that bump stick in the dragster engine for run in, then go over the deep end.

I ran the same Hooptie pump in on an Erson cam. Might make a difference in developing a wear pattern. The last gear Doc used had a couple years of Nitrous passes on it. What is the common factor for OPDG Failure?
Did we ever get to the bottom of this? A hardened gear keeps things at bay for a while.
I know folks that have run everything, never had a problem. Other reports come from all manufacturers cams.
How about machine work? Is it possible that some pump to cam line bores aren't right?

Enquiring minds want to know! :D

I have to say this, because if we are honest with ourselves, there is no "best". Dutra's cams may do what Dutra wants "best". But they're "what Dutra wants". I have no doubt they're very good. But that doesn't mean they're "best" or that everything else is "inferior". Some will tell you they think stock is "best". And their criteria for choosing such may well be different from yours - and mine as well. There is no "best for everyone".

Frankly, I think the idea that you have to seek offense at someone else's suggestion of something you don't know is a little outside of good manners. There's no reason to try to pick a fight with me, nor am I trying to pick one with you.

Personally, I like regrinds on a stock used core. Also used a few MP cams and a Crane from 1989. Never had an oil pump gear failure.

I hope this thread will not go into negative territory, folks...

Comp Nitrated cams DO NOT play well with a Dutra hardend pump gear with high valve spring pressure.Guzzi Mark

Agreed. You said your cam is "even better", and I want to know what makes you say so. No fight being picked, no offense being taken, no claims of ultimate superiority of Dutra's cam designs, none of this other stuff you're objecting to that I never actually uttered. I just want some backup for your assertion, is all. Can you provide it?
