I went ahead and replaced the water pump, I thought that was where the whirring/grinding noise was coming from. I already had one in the garage anyway. However, it's still making that noise. Not all the time though. When I looked at the crank pulleys closer, the one in the middle looks "loose" to me. This is the pulley on the crank that the alternator belt rides on.
I can actually move that pulley forward and backward a bit. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this isn't normal, is it? The other two pulleys are tight, this is the only one that has any play. Do I need to replace the entire harmonic balancer?
I have a spare slant in my garage that I can rob parts from.

The AC pulley bolts to the back of the damper and the power steering pulley to the front. The damper ring is bonded to the hub and if it's loose then it much be replaced/rebuilt. There have been recent discussions on dampers if you don't have a good one around.

Yep...or if taking the gamble take the one off your spare slant but it may fail in short time due to age and wear as well...

So does that whole thing just unbolt?
Thanks for the replies!

There are three bolts on the front of the damper. These remove your power steering drive pulley. Then depending on the damper you have (after you get it off the car) the rear pulley may unbolt also. The damper on my truck had both the rear sheaves bonded to the damper.

Look on ebay for nice quality dampers made in the land of Oz.

The damper is pressed onto the crank and requires a puller to remove. The sheet metal pulleys bolt to the damper hub.

Thanks again for the replies fellas!
What's strange to me is that it doesn't make this sound all the time. Last night, it started making this noise about a minute after I drove off from work, and it stopped after the slant had warmed up. This morning, as I drove my youngest son to daycare, it did not do it at all.
:? ?????

Okay, so I need to use a puller to get it off. When I install the new/unbroken one, do I need to use an installer? Or will a rubber mallet suffice?
I've never done this on a slant before.
Thanks in advance fellas!

All you need is the bolt that goes in the crank snout. Slider the damper on as far as you can by hand, then use the bolt to press it the rest of the way on. This only works if there is no pulley bolted to the front of the damper.

Thanks Reed!
However, I don't seem to have one of these bolts. Can you suggest where I might find one? Or what size I need?
Thanks!!!

Find a junked Mopar smallblock at the boneyard. They usually have them. That is where I get mine. People have posted the size and thread pitch in numerous other posts on the board if you want to get a brand new one.

If you want one, go with 3/4-16 x 1.5" and a big washer.
F.Y.I. the bolt head size is 1 1/4 inches.

I have found, that most of the time, the small/big block bolt is not long enough to get enough threads started to pull the damper on. Easiest way, is to, either get a longer bolt and some washers form a nut/bolt store, or get an "installer from a part store tool loaner program. All depends which is more convient.

A simpler tact: Have you tried removing the belts when the noise begins? Seems like that could eliminate (or single out) a noisy alternator or PS pump pretty quickly.

When mine made a noise like you described it turned out to be the alternator.
