| Post subject: | Ran car out of gas, runs poorly now |
Well I ran my car out of gas  And now it runs like crap, it chugs like a lawnmower. I replaced the fuel filter and bought a second one, should I clean the plugs too, because I didn't realize it was out of gas and proceeded to crank it over again and again. So I'm assuming the plugs have something to do with it too. Thanks in advance for any ideas on how to get it running smooth again.

You're going to have to pull the carburetor apart and clean it very carefully. |

Yep,you might even have some gunk/blockage in the lines running from the tank and the sending unit itself. Never let it get below 1/4 tank,thats where all the "trash" sits.

before you pull the entire carb apart try this.......disconnect the fuel line and remove the needle valve and seat. clean it out and make sure there is no debris in it. i have had stuff keep the needle from seating and what happens is the carb floods, making it run crappy |

A lot of gas filters don't catch the fine stuff unless you get one that goes below 10 microns. Mine goes to the 2 micron level and it sure is nice......no more carb rebuilds or quick tear downs. The bowls used to collect very fine sediment or something would stop the needle and seat from sealing, but no longer..... I will never go back to a common standard in-line filter. It would have to be a very high quality filter. Maybe SL6 Dan knows of some..... |

I'm really not sure why but I have a fram plastic filter on my Scamp. I could have sworn there was a link for a higher quality filter in the sticky thread? |

Thanks for the feed back, I will take apart the needle and seat, and take off the fuel bowl and clean everything really well |

Before cleaning the carb and installing a new filter, to reduce chances of furture problems, drop the tank and clean it out. After dropping the tank and removing the pick up/sending unit, I just clean the tank out with some a pressure washer after spraying the inside with oven cleaner and letting it sit an hour. Some people take it to a radiator or machine shop and have it boiled out in a caustic tank. It also a good time to change the fuel line flex sections at the tank and fuel pump with new rubber line. |

I got this resolved. I cleaned the needle and seat and then checked all the spark plugs and found #4 was completely gas fouled so after cleaning it up my car ran like it used to. |

I thought the fuel pickup was fixed in the tank? And thus always pulling from the bottom of the tank. |
