Right Don Pal. 9" rear drums should be adequate on a street driven 6 while 70% of the stopping force is on the front brakes. Thank you for sharing.

Disc brakes from almost any RWD Mopar smaller than a C body can be retrofitted to a '72 A body. The real trick is figuring out which one of the many choices is actually the best. If it was me I'd run tall knuckles, 11.75 rotors and rear hung slider calipers with custom hoses. But that is just me, others disagree with my choices. |

I'm running a short knuckle, 11.75" rotor, rear hung slider setup, and Aspen / Volare hoses fit it just fine. I suspect they'd also fit the tall knuckle setup. You just have to remove that metal tab on them.
The real trick is figuring out which one of the many choices is actually the best. If it was me I'd run tall knuckles, 11.75 rotors and rear hung slider calipers with custom hoses. But that is just me, others disagree with my choices. |

I am entertaining options of staying with Small Bolt Pattern front and rear to save on weight while improving stopping function. Any replies / ideas? |

SCAREBIRD is one option for the front. It uses newer calipers and rotors. |

On a scarebird installation into two different 65 Darts I found that in each case the stock 4.5 inch wide wheels severely rubbed on the calipers....even grinding didn't help... Pictures of the mods made to the scarebird install to make stock wheels work are available. Scarebird recommends aftermarket wheels. Search the slant six site for more discussion on this install |

seems a pity cause I like the look of steelies with dog dish wheel covers like the factory got rods of the sixties. 15" steel wheels with SBP seen to be quite rare. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall that the 8 1/4 rear and '73 and up disc brake upgrade will add 150 lbs to the weight of the car. Albeit it is unsprung weight. |

Be aware that if you use the setup from a '73-76 A-body, your front track will be wider on each side by about 7/8". You can use wheels with more backspacing to compensate, assuming they're available. |

I can provide you with how it's possible to modify the Scarebird kit to work for the fronts...I recorded photos of the modifications used on both my 65 & my daughter's 65 Dart.My thinking was identical to yours in terms of keeping things lightweight for good gas mileage and the appearance; however the Scarebird modifications require a visit to the machine shop, etc. If your good with that send me a PM & I'll send you photos & machining instructions. ps: as far as the rears go you'll find the stock brakes will drag the rear tires before the fronts will.....I even tried studs and still the lightweight rear begs the question as to what the purpose of discs would be back there? |
