What differences are there between the two as far as interchangability?

Coming to the pros here.

Thanks,

Dave

What do you want to do? The transmissions don't share shifters or bellhousings. The clutches and flywheels are the same for a given year. driveshafts are the same length. There are no column shifted 4-speeds.

Thanks Joshua, you've actually answered most of my questions. I guess my only other questions are do the older slantsix, 68 and older take the A833 tranny or was there a different 4 spd and what year did the crankshaft change from 1.55 to 1.81 (convertor guide hub). That would lead to the question does the diameter of the pilot bushing for the 4 spd change as well?

Crankshaft and flywheel changed in '68, but the pilot bushing stayed the same. There are '64-65 flanged output A833s and '66 and newer slip-yoke output A833s. The '66-'67 used a smaller output shaft like the A904 and 3-speeds. Then in '75 the A833OD. No other 4-speeds. Well, maybe overseas, but not here.

Just curious, would a 4 speed from a 1972 340v8 fit onto a slant six 1974
that has an automatic now?

Assuming your 340 donor vehicle is an A-body the transmission, shifter and shift linkage will fit. The clutch linkage, clutch pedal and floor hump can probably also come from the donor car, but you'd still need a slant six bellhousing, flywheel and clutch.
