| Post subject: | Ballast Resistor Wiring |
Working on HEI conversion on my '71 D100 and I have some questions on the wiring involved with the ballast resistor. My fsm and any other wiring diagrams I can find show only three wires invoved - ignition run, ignition start and the wire feeding the voltage to the + side of the coil. Mine has 2 wires on either side of the b.r. one of them is a splice. It appears to be a repair to the factory harness but I'm not sure what it is for. Any help would be appreciated. Another question can I eliminate the igntion start side and hook directly to the ign run. This would allow me to leave the factory wire for the coil unmolested just in case I ever wanted to go back to standard ign (I know its crazy - I am purest). Thanks |

Typically I'm used to seeing (ign start) & (coil +) on one side of resistor, and (ign run) with a feed going to the voltage regulator on the other side. I would disconnect the starter & check the ign run circuit with a test light while the ign switch is in full "crank" position. Since the (ign start) ckt normally powers the coil during crank, you want to make sure that your run ckt doesn't "drop out" at all when the switch is at full travel. If that's ok the the run ckt should be fine just to trigger your power relay. |

Hopefully this diagram should clear things up. If you have a 4-pin ECU currently, which it sounds like you have, then you should have two wires at each terminal of the ballast. As for unmolested wires, you can hook the ign run and ign start together, or simply run a jumper wire from one terminal to the other on the ballast. Or you can replace the resistor in an old ballast with a jumper wire so it appears more stock. |
