When warmed up and I shift my 86 D-100 225/A-904 into drive there is a loud "thunk" as the transmission engages that makes the entire truck shudder. This does not happen for reverse or when the tranny is not warmed up. Any idea where to look for the cause/fix?

How long since the last band adjustment?

Would not be a band adjustment problem. No bands are applied in drive/breakaway. First/reverse band is applied in manual low. First/reverse band is applied in reverse. Intermediate band is applied in second gear. No bands applied in high gear.

Does it do this while on fast idle?

But why not in reverse? Hmmm. Valve body issue maybe. Sticky valve or misajusted shift linkage perhaps.

Excessive end play in the clutch packs.

Make sure it is not slack in the u-joints or diff first. :?

I am adding a Tach to see how fast it is idling. I am having choke issues and it does idle very fast.

How do I check to see if it the rear-end?

With the truck in neutral and the wheels blocked so it won't roll over you, crawl under it and turn the driveshaft back and forth by hand. If you can turn it more than 1/4 turn or so you have rear/u-joint issues.
